Marriages and what not
Published by Jedi August 17th, 2006 in IndiaDay 24 was a pretty hectic day by my standards. By my current standards I should say, because these days I'm not as active as I used to be or would be if I still lived in India. That probably also explains why I never needed any exercise in India. The everyday struggle, the rat race was exercise enough.
I'm coming to the end of my stay and spent a lot of the day doing some household chores to help out my folks before I go. For all the progress people keep going on about even a miniscule thing like paying a bill or arranging to get something delivered can prove to be a Herculean task around here.
One of my Uncle's daughters (my cousin) is getting married soon and they were trying to find a place to conduct the ceremony. Now, this is a typical lavish desi wedding with huge guest list and what not so obviously they needed a good bit of space. This immediately rules out any banquet halls and so on you would find around the city, unless you are willing to pay a huge price and booking a posh 5 star hotel or something - the likes of Ambassador or Taj. Alternatives are to conduct it at the outskirts of the city, the suburbs if you will like Gurgaon, Faridabad and Ghaziabad. Most of these places have farm houses, which are very popular for marriages in Delhi these days. Not that farm houses are any less expensive, if anything they are even more expensive, but at least its value for money to some extent. Now you don't have to necessarily go too far out of the city to find such places. The Mehrauli-Gurgaon road is littered with them and so is a certain exclusive area near Vasant Kunj. And these places fall under Delhi itself.

I can see that you are already banging your head and wondering where this post is going so far. Basically, I was dragged along in this sacred journey of finding an auspicious farmhouse for my dear cousin's wedding. I was the guest of honour if you will, offering my unique Jedi perspective
Of course, I know as little about these places as Rakhi Sawant knows about clothes, but I suppose there was no harm tagging along. I could always find something to complain about. Like the grass in this farm house is not as green as in the other place, or I don't like the angle that tree has grown in
Seriously though, the absolute essentials you are really looking to find are ample parking space, a huge space to conduct the ceremony, various arrangements including catering and easy accessibility. Needless to say it was a long tiring day in the wilderness of Mehrauli and although we found a lot of suitable places for such a short notice period we couldn't make up our minds on one. All eyes on the Jedi!
If it was upto me, and its not because of the jedi oath of celibacy, I'd much rather drag the girl to a Mandir. Ok not drag.. wrong term. Persuade. I'd much rather persuade my partner to go to a Mandir and marry in front of Bhagwaan in typical filmy style. Pierce my thumb with the Trishul and decorate the maang. “Bhagwaan ko saakshi maante hue” etc. etc. and get it over and done with. She would then need to go and wash her hair ten times but that's small sacrifice to make for marrying a Jedi. And did I mention alien blood is corrosive?
As I sat in the car and we wandered around, I couldn't help but notice how rich some sections of the society were in Delhi. It really is amazing how much money people have in the Capital. And the owners of these farmhouses for instance. Even these guys must make millions. Some of the houses and places I saw around the city were breathtaking. As far as Delhi traffic was concerned it seemed to have become worse even with all these new roads and flyovers. There is only a certain extent to which a city can grow. If Delhi keeps growing at this rate it will soon enough eat up all the neighbouring states I feel.
Hot summers seem like a distant memory to me now. Its only mid February and I feel hot already! Could I withstand the heat when I return to attend the marriage sometime in summer? Even the thought of it makes me shudder. But I think I'll manage fine for a short duration of time. Or will I? Hmm..

wow! an interesting and funny post…typicaly jedi style of writing…i liked that bit where you spoke about marrying in filmy ishtyle hehe;-)….anyways, that your search eneded fruitfully as you ended up seeing so many lavish houses in the very heart of your city must be great….whtevr, i always knew pl in the capital were rich, is it somthin new u noticed, nw thts quite unnatural as far as u, our jedi is concerned;-)
Hey man !!
SO good to see your post again. All the Jedi fans were lusting for a post since a long time now. LOL, filmy ishtyle?? Join the gang. I dont intend to spend any moolah on my wedding either !! Oh, and people can leave the gifts at home. I wouldnt want any gifts. They can directly pay me in cash [:-P]…that will have to do.
Returning in summer?? Isn’t summer gone already? Do you mean summer of 2007?

Enough is Enough!
I want you back in Europe
- 24 days and still counting - jesus - shaadi karne gaya tha ya shaadi karane?
- I think all this is a ploy - u were chosing the plot for your own marriage in future I think… eh?
So when is the Jedi getthing his Jedee
- when are you going to be hitched
S
Hmm.. yes, finding a wedding venue in this part of the country is also a herculean task! You need to book everything at least 8 months in advance.. otherwise, things get pretty difficult here! And you plan wedding in monsoon, hten God save you!
At times, I really want to elope and get married, you know! Saves a lot of trouble of seeing irritating relatives and taking their “blessings”
And you are getting back in summer?
Before you do, please complete the tags you are given
yes, I will keep reminding you
That was quite an amusing read. Err.. did you go back this summer then?
Yea, one thing that you just can’t miss on the trip back home is an Indian wedding. Friends, relatives, relatives of friends, friends of relatives, relatives of friends of friends of relatives.. there’s always someone somewhere taking the saat pheras. Or was it 7 1/2 pheras. Wtf am I talking about, that was a movie.
I just associate these elaborate affairs with tons and tons of food and thousands of empty disposable plates litterred all over (all the big dustbins stand empty). And of course the post-shaadi bitching. “Kya bekaar khana tha yaar” “What kind of colour is bottle green for a dulhan’s lehanga” “Did you see the dry-cleaner’s tag on the pallu of Mrs Sharma’s saree?”etc etc etc. To think that people spend lacs just to entertain all this… lol We are a nation of show-offs. Especially Punjabis man. We are the ultimate.
Keep writing,
Cheers!
Karan.
hehehe… jedi journeys in his space ship, indeed!
never been to a farmhouse party myself, actually. boohoohoo. anyway, its a nice snap. sadly irregular with de bloggin thing these days, na?
@Ashmi: Ashmi, welcome back. Nice to see you after a while. Hope you are doing fine.. About the wealth in Delhi. Well, it wasnt always this way. I mean it was to some extent but it was mostly confined to certain posh areas inhabited by posh people. Nowadays though the standard has gone up quite high. The percentage of rich people has multiplied manifold.
@GuNs: Filmi style is the best. No hassles!
I mean the summer of 2006. Yes, I did go for about 3 days and came back too.. More about that in a future post perhaps.
@Suyog: Jealous are we?
Just two more days to go man. I cant get hitched even if I wanted to. The Jedi oath of celibacy and all that..
jedi
@Nirwa: Depending upon the season getting a place booked in Delhi can be a nightmare too. There were a couple of advantages in this case though. One that the marriage was being held in summer (or close to summer) which is naturally not the most preffered time because of heat. Another that Delhi combined with the suburbs has thousands of such places and sooner or later you do find one. However, the better the place the more in advance you will have to book it. Thats applies everywhere I guess.
@Karan: Yes I did go back in summer for about 3 days. It was a quite an occassion. Even though it was extremely hot and I was exhausted by spending 10 or 12 hours travelling each way, I had blast!! Shaadis are such a brilliant occasion man. And yes, I even met people I thought only existed in my imagination
I couldnt agree more with you regarding the wastage during shaadis. Imagine people spending half of their life earnings just to show off LOL
@LH: Good to see you mate. Hope the new job and the new life is working out well.. Yeah, I have been pretty irregular with blogging too yaar. Various reasons!

Filmy Style Marriage !!!! I don’t think so. I always thought u will marry jedi style. In some far distant planet with 4 moons etc….
SS; I really wish I could do that. But the FTL drive on my spaceship is broken right now. Looks like mandir is the only option as of now.
