I'd say for most people it begins with the intention of living a few years abroad. And then life happens and those years keep piling up. In fact, the phenomenon even has a name - the X+1 syndrome hehe.. Some people can maintain a fine balance but clearly there is no way you can exist in both worlds at once. I visit India "often enough" - at least once or sometimes twice or more a year. But no amount of time is sufficent is it? It brings weird feelings. I am suddenly a bit scared to go out and live in another country. I mean, a long time ago I made a decision that I would never leave my country for good. The most I would do is a short trip for work. I guess I was right about it. Its no fun to live away from your motherland away from friends, family and the very earth where you were born.
