It gets quite cold here in Delhi in Jan and Feb. Especially the mornings and evenings get quite chilly. What's more the houses aren't really built to withstand cold since it's like a furnace most of the year. The weather is a bit deceptive too.
So there I was on my bike early morning yesterday, casually roaming about dressed as lightly as I could.. “You've no idea how cold it gets there yaar! Are you scaring me with this slightly chilly Delhi weather! Ha!” Sure enough, 15 minutes later I was freezing my ass off. Anyhow, you reap what you sow. Woke up today with a sore throat and a dripping nose. The flu bug is here to bite me. It was a beautiful morning nonetheless.
Strangely enough I'm happy that I caught flu. Usually it's the stomach bug, which bites me every time I visit. Flu is still manageable. Highly inconvenient but manageable.. allowing me to enjoy myself all the same. Now some here might think that the stomach bug is a result of some deadly microbes you catch as soon as you land here, or the fact that I'm not so immune to them anymore..(partly true) However, the actual reason is somewhat different and we'll come to that.
Got invited to dinner at a relative's. Now this is where I've learnt to get cautious. For some reason “Atithi Devo Bhava” around these parts, and certainly with my relatives, has found a new meaning - “Atithi KumbhaKaran Bhava”. I mean they'll feed you so much until you drop to the floor literally. And even then they might open your mouth and stuff as much food as they can in it and then insert a funnel and pour the rest through that. C'mon Guys! I know you see me once a year, and really want me to eat and appreciate all the 200 dishes you have made for me. But I'm after all human!! And if you refuse, it would be inferred that the food wasn't mmm.. good enough! This is the sole cause of all my stomach problems. Of course, I've learnt my lessons in the past so I come up with good excuses now - the best of them being “I'm not well at all today, Uncle. Just touch me, you’ll notice the temperature” Of course, in today's case it was true. God bless flu! Thou art my saviour this time!
