Jedi, on Love - Part I
Published by Jedi January 18th, 2006 in General, ThoughtsLove is in the air! No matter what blog I've been to lately, all I read is heaps and heaps of mush. Even people who think they're talking about global warming or Nelson Mandela are somehow inadvertently talking about love. I wonder what happened suddenly. Perhaps it's the winter. Everyone wants to be warm n' cozy instead of cold n' miserable and this somehow also triggers another feeling, that of love. People seem to have caught the love bug this winter just like flu, which is great, as long as it's common and not bird flu. Hmm.. No wonder. Love is a disease!

Emily's first generation iPod is as dull as her choice of music. So there I was, shuffling the shuffle, as Bush junior would say, listening to one inconsequential song after another when I heard something, which made me sit up and take notice. Ok it wasn't anything as dramatic as that, but it was different and unusual. For the Jedi, who simply hates mushy romantic songs, different and unusual is always welcome. Maybe it's because the Jedi himself is different and unusual. Aargh! There I go talking about me again. Anyhow, what I'm trying to say is, that song made me think - perhaps not for the right reasons, but still.
There are nine million bicycles in Beijing
That’s a fact,
It’s a thing we can’t deny
Like the fact that I will love you till I die.
Ok, its still somewhat mushy but at least its different. Katie Melua never seemed like the kind of person who could write a love song, if indeed it was she who wrote it. Why, I saw her on a quiz show the other day and thought she was as thick as they come. Anyhow, back to the song. This song has been a huge hit and people have really appreciated it, but it raises a few questions in my mind.
Katie, how did you arrive at the magical figure of 9 million?
Did you personally go around each house in Beijing and ask them?
“Hello Mr Chow! I am Katie Melua. I am writing a love song. How many bicycles do you have at home?â€
And since, you base the fact that you'll love me on the fact that there are nine million bicycles in Beijing, you are lying!! Obviously there aren't nine million. I could still believe you if you said nine million four thousand and eighty five. Your undying love is a lie, just like your figures! It also makes me wonder what those two birds atop that high lamppost are doing! When I took the pic above on that gloomy day, I thought those were simply two lovebirds just hanging about. But perhaps, they are counting the number of bicycles in Amsterdam!! Who knows?
Anyway, she redeems herself somewhat in the next few lines.
We are twelve billion light years from the edge,
That’s a guess,
No-one can ever say it’s true
But I know that I will always be with you.
There you go with your measurements again! But that's more like it. At least she agrees it's a guess. Just like her guess that she'll always be with me. Katie, you *will* always be with me. In my thoughts.. As a very bad memory!
I must say though that this song ‘Nine million bicycles' by Katie Melua and her whole album ‘Piece by Piece' is rather nice and quite relaxing. What?? The Jedi actually liked it? Then what's all this nitpicking? Because that's how I am! Different and unusual.. Aaaaargh! There he goes on about himself again!

ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is hillarious. I believe jedi is nitpicking cos this song is making him mushy and he doesn’t like that. hmmmm…..
SS
On second thought probably these birds are hired by Katie Melua to count the bicycles (or trees) in Amsterdam for her new song.
SS
Kya baath hain!!
Jedi talking about Love-shove and all that??
Mamla kya hain? Is the jEDI in love? Has the love bug finally stuck jedi? Koun hain woh maaya?
:P - Now I know why u are heading back and on seventh heaven these days.
The photo says it all - here, the jEDI wishes too that he and his love sit cozily looking down at the world, from far far away
- OK, my imagination sucks… but you get the picture.
Now coming to 9 million bicyles, I dunno where you heard this song from (I think ppl in romatic mood usually end up finding such songs :p), but you have forward me this mathematical song
- I so want to hear it.
ye Ye - this is just part 1 - the jEDI has been stuck!
Supremus
hey!as i guessed quite long back, you’re not for things romantic…unlike me ofcourse…infact had been reading a lot of blogs today and all i find are people like you who seemed to hate this wonderful feeling, yeh i claim it to be *wonderful*…and oh! how you took the song literally and distorted it…pity her…can i make a wild guess?…are you a leo?…coz they are ruled so much by their heart…man! you may think mush is all a pooh!…but trust me a day will come you may think otherwise and i”l be waiting for that day and even then, obstinate as you seem you may not accept the truth….sorry jedi, if i come out as very rude…guess we always don’t have to agree on all
SS: I agree with you on both counts. I’ve always thought you insightful!
Supremus: There’s no such thing. However, the album is pretty good. Some of the songs are much better than the above mentioned one. Nice and relaxing.
jedi
Ashmi: Whatever gave you the idea that I’m not for anything romantic?! LOL! Yes, I have experienced all these emotions too and way beyond that
There are couple of things I want to say here.
a) Nobody is an authority on Love.
b) Love need not be melodramatic.
Poking fun at silly romantic songs doesnt signify general hatred towards the concept of love. Also, there comes a time when you grow out of all the sugar-coated mushy stuff and laugh back at all those silly times. It’ll happen for you too, and I’ll be waiting for that
Also, as I mentioned towards the end, even though I was making fun of it I did like the song for it being different. In fact the whole album is good and I recommend it.
jedi
Ah! i like that! love needn’t be melodramatic!
am thru and out. Loonie aka Shilpa and love don’t go together well!!!
Nice post Jedi!:)
Talk to us of your taste in music? Esp. coz you don’t like the usual mushy stuff, that makes it more interesting.
oh! how i hate those…”oh baby! i will do anything for you..I love you…you’re the queen of my heart..quit playing games..”..balh blah songs!
Don’t you belong to the Floyd genre as well??!!*expectant bambi eyes*
Ah! btw..my latest post on relationships was meant for True Blue and a few of my friends.
Why spoil sumthing when u r already in it? the case is different when u r aloof!
Whoa!! WHOA!!! Where the heaven’s name is my comment????
The Jedi has deliberately removed my comment from his post..
Just because my comments are vague and irrlevant.. it doesn’t mean you remove them..

Now it miraculously re appeared with this note beside it..
What’s going on?
:P
i don’t know how are you so confident of coming out of this whole feeling of …i love to live in it,gives me hppiness feeling the way i do…that doesn’t mean its melodramatic…i find i can clearly categorise people into 2 groups who are into all this,in your term *mushy romanticism* and those who evade it all for reasons of their own…escaping their heart’s call…whatever no words of people can pose me to be a fool…even if one does…i hardly care
Ashmi: First of all, I get this feeling that you think all of the above is directed at you. I guess after all that you have been going through it is understandable. But let me assure you that it is Not. No one is trying to persuade you to change your way of thinking. You are free to Live or Love the way you want, and its no one’s business. And No, just because you are still quite young and havnt grown out of all the hardcore mushy stuff, doesnt mean that you are a fool. Even if you got up now, danced around a tree or sang a love song in the rain..
just kidding!
The point we are trying to make is that Love is not about mushy and corny things. Also, let me assure you that no one and the least me is trying to “escape their hearts call” (i’m still LOLing at that one
). Is it so difficult to imagine that love need not be melodramatic and full of saccharine assertions?? It is really foolish to think that just because someone doesnt like silly romantic songs or Bollywood style melodrama, he/she loves less than any other, or is trying to supress romantic feelings
If anything its the opposite!
Some people, especially the ones who have been in love a few times, leave all this behind in the teenage years, but for some it might take decades. Its all a matter of time! But hey! there’s nothing wrong with it
jedi
If I promise not to talk about love, will you come visit me back? Your listed in Greenland and I need a flag from Greenland. 114 other countries have stopped by- No Greenland.
If it turns out your 115, I’ll post ten things I think I know about Greenland.
Love, no wait, Cheers,
Debbie
Oh!jedi, you seem to explain things like an elder brother and i completely agree with you regarding the fact that one doesn’t have to enjoy mushy stuff to prove he/she is in love…oh! yes, my mom is the most unromantic woman i’ve come across(don’t tell her, she’ll kill me ;-)…yet, i know no one can love my dad with as much passion as she does….anyways now that you don’t visit my site to leave your wise piece of advice i’ve got you through this:
