Lakes and disturbing questions
Published by Jedi January 8th, 2006 in General, ThoughtsI am surrounded by a weird group of friends, both physical and imaginary. Did I hear some of you say - “I can see why”? Suit yourself!
We'd been driving for about an hour on that long, uneventful, boring highway when someone spotted what looked like some sort of backwaters or a bay. This was slightly alarming because we were supposedly, or should have been, at least 60 miles away from any sort of sea. This was even more alarming because none of us was high at the time, or at least we thought so!
The general consensus was to explore and we drove off the road towards it. Only to find that it was in fact a nice big lake. In retrospect, I think none of us believed the sea story and it was more of an excuse to take a small break. Obviously I played along too. But the immediate question - What was this place? Perhaps we should ask a local, if we could find one.

Almost an hour later one did come along and I posed the million dollar question.
“What's it called?”
He took one confused look at me and another at my multicolored, multilingual, multifaceted friends and answered: “It's called a lake.”
“Isn't that wonderful? Who would have thought? What is the name of this lake my friend?”
Mr. Local thought a while and replied: “Well.. we just call it the ‘Lake'. That's the name. ”
“That's very creative” I said, in a very serious tone almost.
Then I thought about it a bit. He probably lives a mile or so away from the lake in some small little village with some 50 odd people. Why the heck should they name the lake anything at all? Especially, when there's no other lake for another 50 miles. For them the lake is umm.. ‘The Lake’.
All this while, Yogi was standing at the water's edge staring straight ahead at the horizon. I felt like an idiot. Here we are at such a wonderful place, in presence of such beauty and all we are trying to do is find the name of this lake. Why are we so hung up on names anyway? Who cares? Yogi apparently was one person who didn't, and I suddenly had new found admiration for him. So straight I went and stood right beside Yogi to enjoy and share with him this immense view.
“Its lovely isn't it? “, I whispered.
He seemed deep in thought. Wow! This was one side of Yogi I'd never seen.
“Its really beautiful isn't it?”, I said again.
“I'm wondering”, he mumbled, without taking his eyes off the lake “Do the fish ever drown?”

oh la la! the water’s so blue..!:-)..
Actually the pic is taken from a good angle..that makes the pic look more interesting. I love photography.!!:-)
“This is called a lake!!!”…hilarious!!!!
ROFL!!!
This was a great post - asbolute icing on cake being “This is a lake” and Yogi’s “Do fish drown” LOL. Umm - the pic is fantastic. No two doubts abt that one; but where in the world did you end up meeting this “Lake” - I mean where you so far away from civilization that the only name this lake could beget was err.. Lake?
Hehehehehe - good one
Suyog
Umm..
I’ve kind of started liking this friend of yours.. Yogi.. I think he was the same one who goofed up in that elevator.. with a Bangladeshi dude.. something about Diwali and phone numbers.. hehehe.. See.. I got good memory..
Tell your friend Yogi.. that he has just found himself a fan!!
NM
PS - Its called a lake - priceless!!
as we all know the famous shakespearian phrase…”what’s in a name”…so why be bothered by the name of that piece of pure beauty,so blue and placid…it almost makes me wanna get drowned and lost in that mass of blue…fantastic pic!…
Loonie: I agree, it looks more interesting that way. Wanted to try something different with it.. To be honest, this was one such occasion when it worked! hehe
Supremus: There are so many lakes in these parts man, especially around Scotland, that if they started naming them they would probably run out of names. But in this case, I guess people simply couldnt come up with a more creative name and thus it remained “The Lake” for centuries.
jedi
Nirwa: Yes he is the very same devil indeed. I would be talking more about the *great* man, in my subsequent posts.. with his permission of course!
Ashmi: Blue little Goddess in a blue little lake. Its a match made in heaven!
jedi
My Dear Lord Radel,
Please let your friend know that I am his greatest fan and I would like to have his autographed photograph!!!
I still break into fits of laughter when I read about that Diwali incident!
Nirwa
Amdavad ni chori: You do know that being my disciple, Yogi needs to follow certain rules? e.g. no photographs and no autographs. Perhaps, I will make an exception in your case and allow him to do so Hmm.. we’ll see
jedi
yeh!…i think so too…a perrrrrfect match
Jedi I like the way you write. It has so many mixed flavours. Your writing even inspires me to write. Unfortunately its not my cup of tea.
I have a question though Is this Yogi one of your imaginary friends or he really exists? My bet is on imaginary though. He probably represents jedi in a different flavour. We all know you have a multi-facet personality.
SS
Ashmi: Yes a perfect blue bubble world match
SS: If you keep saying things like that I might well stop posting anything

Imaginary or Real ? Hmm.. I guess I’ll leave that to your imagination! hehe
Btw.. its high time you did start your own blog too.
Good picture. Yogi definetly sounded like he was “deep” in thought.
Vikram: Welcome! Thats what scares me most about Yogi hehe
nice post…funny…and great pic…looks amazing…
Monk: Thanks! and welcome to my little space.
